Go give this guy some love!

I'm glad I live in this city.

Because when things like this become more frequent, it'll make ANYWHERE else seem like heaven.

And last night, on my way home, the jackass commissioner decided HEY LET'S HAVE A SEAT BELT CHECKPOINT ON BEL AIR ROAD (which happens to be a heavily-traveled thoroughfare for people entering and leaving the city on the east side).

In the past 2 weeks alone the violence and crime has skyrocketed...because kids are out of school...so OF COURSE it makes sense to waste time and manpower on a bloody seat belt checkpoint.

Shotgun + shoulder = I'm a weenie

Now that the weather's nice, the club Chris joined last year has regular events during the week. One of those events is a shotgun clinic for newbies to learn to shoot trap.  It's free and is held by a couple of guys who really know their stuff when it comes to shotguns.  I've been anticipating this for weeks, now.

I went last night. And I learned. Oh, I learned.

  • Wardrobe choice is critical.  No more "normal" bras when shooting a shotgun or rifle.  Sports bra from now on.  I had an indent in my shoulder the rest of the night from that dang bra strap
    • I need to remember to grab my shoulder pad the next time I go.  I may also swap out the stock butt pad for a gel one.
  • Must invest in good ear plugs, possibly a pair of custom-fit jobbies.  The butt of the gun kept knocking my muffs off my head.  Anyone have any suggestions for AFFORDABLE but worthwhile ones?  I really, really hate the squishy foam things...not only are they uncomfortable, but they tend to fall out of my ears after about 20 minutes.
  • Need to get back to lifting weights.  I could handle the shotgun better than I expected, thanks to a few months of lifting, but I need more work.  My arms are still tired.
  • I need to stop flinching, anticipating, and closing my eyes.  Can't hit jack with my eyes closed!  This will be remedied with time on the range, I think.
  • I need to learn to move my body with the shotgun, rather than just moving my arms.  I apparently tensed my whole body up and failed at follow-through.
  • Need to swap out the cheekpad on the stock.  I think the shorter pad will help me get a better sight picture.  The tall one doesn't help me in the slightest.
  • I discovered I had the wrong choke in the shotgun last night...after I got home.  Heh, oops.  This has been remedied.
I didn't hit a dang thing, but I plan on going back in 2 weeks, hopefully better prepared.

Baltimore police commissioner is stepping down...but why?

Two weeks ago, the Sun reported Baltimore Police Commissioner Bealefeld intends to step down on August 1. This was not met with sadness in my house, though we were confused...rumor had it the guy intended to keep the position for a good long while yet.

Turns out this might be his way of avoiding another scandal (anyone else remember this? how about this?). Most folks already knew about this incident, where a man was stripped and beaten by a crowd of teenagers. Sounds like things were far worse than anyone actually reported to the public. In fact, it sounds like it was almost a riot. And this is the first we're hearing about it.

Someone tell me what's so great about Baltimore? For some strange reason, I just don't get it.

I forgot to post this yesterday, because I was offline.

Was too busy spending time with my mom.

Anyway.  Happy Mother's Day to all the moms, all the dads who play both roles, and all the *other* folks who raise kiddos...aunts, uncles, grandparents, friends.  You're all awesome people.

Diamond pet food recall

I know this is a total departure from the whole guns/politics subject matter, but it's important.  I feed Deckard Taste of the Wild, which is affected by this recall.  Check your bags!  Info on the recall past the jump.

Now THIS is a TARGET.

Hey TBolt, this is right up your alley.

I'm tempted to pick one up...I just don't know where we'd be able to USE that thing.

I think I've coined a new phrase.

Something I've noticed lately is the skyrocketing pageviews after SayUncle links to my little corner of the internets. Julie's noticed this phenomenon, as well.

This is what happens when you "get Uncled" (note the jump on Monday):

(click to embiggenate)

While I was busy looking at the stats I noticed this blog kicked over the 20k mark. Holy crap! You guys must like me or somethin'.

:D

Seriously, thanks for all the visits everyone.

SpareOne cell phone

I don't know if anyone's been keeping up on this, but a new company (SpareOne) has a cheap cell phone available to the general public. It doesn't have a screen and can only do basic cell phone things, and it doesn't require charging...all you need is a AA battery (included) for emergency calls. You can also stick a SIM card in if you want to use it like a regular phone. They have two models: one for the US, and one for international use. Oh, and if you store it properly, the battery has a fifteen year shelf life.

More info can be found here, and they've got a deal going on for $10 off one phone until May 8 if you use the coupon code SOPLAY05.

This isn't a paid ad, but I like the idea of having a phone around for emergencies. I picked one up a month or two ago to keep in the car.
