What do you make of this:

"11. Carry permits require 16h training.

12. Handgun permits require 8h training (or a carry permit), background check, and $100 every five years."

??

Carry permits? Sh!t, I'd take a 16 hour course in order to carry - every day, including Christmas.

I agree, if they want us to train I'll train as long as they actually let me carry.

HOWEVER. I DO NOT like the idea of a permit to own. We're not New York or New Jersey, there's no reason to require permits and registration.

My husband just asked "Does that 16 hr course guarantee (back ground check passing) a permit?"

Good question. Knowing MD - it doesn't.

And that's a BIG IF this is actually a course allowing MD citizens to carry. Who know what "carry permit" actually means at this point.

As Jayne would say: I'm smelling a lot of "if" coming off this plan...

Lol, nothing guarantees a permit here.

I just printed out all 38 pages of the PDF from the link. I'm wading through it now.

Ok, if I’m understanding this correctly:

In order to purchase or own a handgun in MD, you’ll need to have a “firearm registration license”. In order to obtain this license, you will need to take an 8 hour class. However, you are exempt from the 8 hour class if you’ve already passed a “recognized” ( NRA? ) class, are a current or honorably discharged member of the military, are a LEO, or have a current MD CCW permit ( what, that’s like 3 people, right? ). However, in order to purchase any new guns – you will have to show the gun seller your MD license. It is good for 5 years.

As to this 16 hour class. It appears that it is the CCW portion of the law. It appears it is being changed to SHALL ISSUE and you have to take a 16 hour course – but the provision that you must have “a good and substantial reason” to CCW is still present in the law. This is definitely a step in the right direction, but most of us will still be denied as our fair government doesn’t feel we have a “good and substantial reason” to carry.

I haven't had enough time to read through everything, but I'm agreeing with what you're interpreting.

G&S is currently being challenged, and the Second Amendment Foundation is still working against Maryland to change the wording. Good luck passing it, Mayor McCheese.

Have you contacted your legislators yet?

Maura said...

No legislative contacting yet, but I will be doing so in the next few days when I hear more substantial ( people more gun savvy than myself ) interpretations of the legalese.

Mayor McCheese. *snort* Love it.

If you go to the MD Legislature site: http://mgaleg.maryland.gov/webmga/frm1st.aspx?tab=home

Click "Voice my Opinion" and enter your address and zip, a message box will appear that will create your message and deliver it to your Senator and Legislators, and copy the Governor and others.

Yep, pretty much... Time to move!

Your stuff is alread registered. The State Cops know all about you ARs, every pistol, everything you bought in a MD gunshop. If the law passes they will mail you a court order to transport your contraband to a local Police station. It's in the bill.

Write you Senator, write Frosh. Heck email them all. I kept mine polite, short, and sweet. Urged them to take a page from the President... more security in schools, more prevention of prohibited person from getting guns.

TBolt - I know. See: why I said we're fucked.

Also, I've been harassing them. I'm even getting people involved who don't normally care. :)

It is my understanding that Maryland is not a "shall issue" state.Given it's demographics it will never be a shall issue state and certainly not while this president is in office."Fast and furious" was designed to bring the outrage that Obama needed but didn't work. Unfortunately, besides the sensless killings, the mass murders in Ct. fell right into their hands and if there is one thing this administration knows how to do is to use a crises to their advantage. If you read up on Obama you will see that it has always been his goal to stop gun ownership. We will be lucky if the only thing that gets passed is "assalt rifles" and high capacity clips. It is not only Obama, then there are the powers to be. How are they going to make the USA a deminished country and creat a "New World Order" if Americans are armed? I read that George Soros donated billions (with a "B") through various organizations to get Obama elected. Think about it.

They can only Confiscate what you Physically Have. I'm recommending that those of you who are watching the Berlin Wall being built in your Backyard take the time to "Sell" your "Soon-to-be Banned" Firearms to a Good Friend in Virginia ( or N.H. if you live up North, etc.) and wait for the Madness to Pass.

Then you turn around and "Buy" them back.

But in the mean time, you replace them with Bolt Action Rifles, like say an 8mm Mauser, a few .357 K-Frames and Lever Guns, and 12/20 Gauge "Hunting Shotguns." That will provide you with an Adequate Level of Protection. If they go for the Pistol Permit, then it's Lever Guns and Pumps.

Yeah, I know it SUCKS, but it beats calling 911 while holding off the Goblins with a Claw Hammer!

Anonymous, right now Maryland is a "May issue" state. CCW is available, but you must meet a specific and extremely high standard to be approved: you must be deemed under imminent threat ( under a protective order, or regularly carry large sums of money for your job ) in order to get a CCW. 99.9% of all applicants are turned down.

The new law still has this very high bar attached to it, and this is what we find onerous.
